A student reports about a visit of the underground memorial (Welfen barracks)

26 June 2012

From the very beginning it was a strange feeling. It was cruel to image, that 14000 prisoners had died there during the construction. First of all Warrant Officer Class Müllershowed us a very interesting and informal one hour lasting presentation about the place. The facts were astounding. The bunker was built 26 meter high. Our guide told us, that the men and women had been tortured to death. We were absolutely speekless, when we saw a part of a film about the time after world war II, when the Landsbergians had to evacuate the camps around Landsberg and burry the deads. It is hard to describe our feeling, when we heard about the inhuman condition of the victims standing on the place of their suffering seeing the high ceilings and the stonewalls . I think it was very important for us to make this experience.
